Reports coming out of the US indicate that President Barack Obama is to pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the US in several stages, beginning with a 17 per cent reduction by 2020.

According to the White House the offer will be made at December\'s United Nations climate talks in Copenhagen, which Mr Obama will attend.

The talks are aimed at drawing up a new treaty to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.

UN climate chief Yvo de Boer says Mr. Obama’s attendance could be vital for a deal.

Mr. Obama’s proposed cuts are similar to those included in a bill passed by the US House of Representatives in June.
