A Swiss court has granted filmmaker Roman Polanski bail in the sum of $4.5 million.

Polanski was being held in a Swiss jail in connection with a US child sex abuse case.

The court said Polanski could stay at his chalet in the Swiss Alps where he would be monitored by an electronic tag.

The 76-year-old has been wanted in the US since fleeing the country in 1978 after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex a year earlier with a 13-year-old girl.

He was held in Zurich after traveling from France in September.
