A controversial property tax bill is scheduled to be discussed in the Trinidad and Tobago parliament today.

The bill is intended to change the basis on which taxes are levied on property in the country.

The measure has been heavily criticized, and at least two groups have said they would mount protest action to coincide with the parliamentary session where the matter is being discussed.

The bill is being rejected by the main opposition United National Congress.

Another political party, the Congress of the People, alleges that the proposed law infringes on the fundamental right to own property.
