The United Nations (UN) said the world must urgently increase food production to ease escalating prices.

It has also pledged to set up a task force on the crisis, which is threathening to destabilise developing nations.

The worldwide cost of food has reportedly gone up by around 40 percent since mid-2007.

The crisis has caused riots and protests in countries such as Cameroon, Haiti and Egypt.

The UN said rising oil prices, the devaluation of the US dollar and natural disasters have contributed to the increase in food prices.
