British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it has been a disappointing election for the Labour party, in the wake of its loss in the recent council votes.
According to the BBC, research suggests that the Labour Party won 24 percent of the votes cast in England and Wales, behind the Tories on 44 percent and Liberal Democrats on 25 percent.
The Labour party has reportedly lost 253 councillors and several key councils.
In the meantime, newly appointed General Secretary of the Party, David Pitt-Watson has reportedly decided not to take up the position.
Mr Pitt-Watson was appointed after Peter Watt resigned over the row about donations from businessman David Abrahams.
