China lake rising

The water level in an earthquake-formed lake in China is reportedly still rising, despite the creation of a drainage channel.

The Xinhua news agency said by early this morning the water level was more than six feet or two metres higher than the man-made channel created to ease the problem.

Soldiers are using anti-tank weapons to blast away rocks and mud to prevent the water from getting to the channel.

Experts have warned that the lake could burst at any time, flooding the homes of more than one million people.

At least 250,000 people have already been evacuated from the area since the devastating May 12 earthquake, which caused the Tangjiashan quake lake to form.
