Stricter media rules

Information Minister, Olivia Grange has announced plans for increased monitoring of the media.

She announced the ministry is considering the introduction of financial sanctions for broadcasting content in breach of laws relating to inappropriate exposure of children to sex, violence, profanity, dangerous drugs and substance abuse.

Ms Grange said financial sanctions could act as a deterrent to licensees breaching the rules.

Ms Grange also warned that payola would end under her watch.

During her contribution to the sectoral debate yesterday Ms Grange also announced there would soon be legislation to introduce new categories of Broadcasting and Cable licences, including Independent Programme Provider.

However, advertising revenue will not be granted to licensees whose programming does not promote content, which speaks to the Jamaican experience, she added.
