Hay-Webster will not be pressured
Former People’s National Party (PNP) member, Sharon Hay-Webster, says she will not be pressured into resigning as Member of Parliament (MP) for South Central St. Catherine.
Hay-Webster resigned from the PNP on Tuesday, but has decided to remain an independent member of the House of Representatives.
But a day after her resignation, PNP General Secretary, Peter Bunting, called for her to also resign as MP.
He told a special meeting in Central Village, in her constituency, last night that her continued presence in Gordon House is not being viewed favourably.
But Hay-Webster says the PNP should not count on her giving up the seat.
In response to comments that she lacks credibility to continue holding the seat, Hay-Webster says Bunting cannot speak to her credibility as he doesn’t know the facts of her case.
Her resignation from the PNP follows pressure from the party for her to resign over her dual citizenship status.
The pressure intensified recently after a Wikileaks cable revealed by The Gleaner said Hay-Webster had not gone through with renunciation of her US citizenship despite having announced she had began the process.
