Agri Ministry: Only local pork in hams this Christmas, third year running
The Agriculture Ministry is reporting that there is enough locally-produced food in Jamaica for the Christmas season.
As a result, the permanent secretary, Donovan Stanberry, is appealing to consumers to eat local foods as much as possible this holiday season.
Stanberry told the Jamaica Information Service that the domestic food crop sub-sector grew by 8.5 per cent during the July to September quarter and further growth is expected for the current October to December quarter.
He says yam production, for example, is at a record high and the banana sector has rebounded after it was severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy last year.
Stanberry says for the third year running, Jamaica has not imported any pork to make ham during the Christmas season.
In fact, he says with the current over production of pork, the Government is actively pursuing export.
