RGD fee hike takes effect tomorrow

Published:Sunday | March 2, 2014 | 10:36 AM

Starting tomorrow, Jamaicans will have to pay more than twice the amount they previously paid to obtain a birth, adoption, marriage or death certificate from the Registrar General’s Department (RGD).

That’s when the rates will move from J$650 dollars to $1,500. Noting that it costs J$2,064 to produce one copy of a birth certificate, the RGD says the increase forms part of an effort to sustain operations and improve service delivery.

However, the RGD says it will continue its Free First Birth Certificate initiative and others that enable the less fortunate to access its services.

A number of other fees, including those payable to the RGD by marriage officers and civil registrars, will not be adjusted.

The department says it has been experiencing significant challenges financing its operations despite prudent financial management.
