KINGSTON, Jamaica:
National Security Minister Peter Bunting says he is pleasantly surprised at the quality of leadership in Jamaica’s public service, especially at the management and supervisory level.
He made the comment as he responded to questions on the hope for Jamaica given the problems associated with national security.
Speaking on Justice, on Power 106 FM on Tuesday, the Government Minister commended the quality of leadership in the police force, his ministry and across other Government agencies.
He says given his private sector background, he entered public service with a feeling of elitism but has been left surprised after interacting with leaders in the public service.
After two years on the job, the national security minister says a shift towards intelligence-led policing and the creation of a single police force were among the most significant strides over the period.
On Tuesday, Bunting announced the $20-million merger of the Island Special Constabulary Force with the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
He also points to efforts to change what he calls the norms of the society, starting with the security forces.
In January, he lamented that his portfolio was deemed to be the graveyard of political careers as Jamaica has been experiencing high violent crime rates for decades.
