The Senate this morning gave tributes celebrating the contribution of women to the growth and development of the society.

Tomorrow, March 8, will be celebrated as International Women’s Day.

In opening the oral statements, Minister with Responsibility for Information, Sandrea Falconer recounted the roles played by several leading Jamaican women including Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

She also noted what she called milestones that empowered women.

Senator Falconer said with the support of Simpson Miller, the Bureau of Women’s Affairs will continue to lead the charge in empowering women and the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.

The Prime Minister has portfolio responsibility for women’s affairs.

Meanwhile, Opposition Senator Marlene Malahoo Forte says gender-based laws need to be more effective as there are too many cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse against Jamaica’s women.
