Jamaica Teaching Council bill review deadline extended

The National Council on Education has extended to March 31, 2014 the deadline to receive comments on the Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC) bill.

The bill is aimed at regulating and improving the status, profile and quality of the teaching profession.

The National Council on Education had been mandated by Minister of Education Ronald Thwaites to coordinate the review of comments on the bill after the Jamaica Teachers’ Association raised concern about some aspects of the document.

The Education Ministry says the council is now in the final stages of review and is inviting written submissions from interested groups and individuals.

Submissions are to be sent to the attention of the Executive Director, National Council on Education, 56 Duke Street, Kingston or by email to: nce@nce.org.jm.

The JTC bill resulted from recommendations made by the Task Force on Educational Reform (2004), which has been under development since 2009.

It has been the subject of various consultative exercises, including consideration by a special committee comprising representatives of key education stakeholders.
