West Indies were in deep trouble against England as a mid-afternoon batting collapse left them battling to avoid defeat at the close of today’s second day of the opening Test at Lord’s.

Chasing England’s 377, West Indies were cruising at 70 for one after lunch before they lost their last nine wickets for 82 runs and were bowled out for 152.

Batting again after England enforced the follow-on, West Indies trailing by 225, were struggling at 39 for two with captain Chris Gayle back in the pavilion without scoring, while Ramnaresh Sarwan made one.

The batsmen at the crease are opener Devon Smith on 25 and Lendl Simmons on five.

Smith top scored for West Indies in the first innings with 46 off 50 balls.

Gayle was bowled in the first innings off the inside edge playing back to Stuart Broad for 28.

Simmons with 16 and Sarwan 13 were the only other batsmen to get into double figures.

In the first innings, West Indies were put under pressure by debutant seamer Graham Onion who claimed five for 38 and off-spinner Graeme Swann who finished with three for 16.

Earlier, Fidel Edwards finished with six for 92 from 26 point three overs, after he needed just three balls after lunch to wrap up England innings.

Ravi Bopara, who resumed on 118, ended on 134 and Swann 63 not out.

England had resumed this morning on 289 for seven.
