WESTERN BUREAU:
As the sun threatened to raise its head, words on the lips of hundreds of Reggae Sumfest fans last Friday morning included: "Is he going to appear under an umbrella?" "Will his skin melt?"
Well, Vybz Kartel appeared at approximately 5:30 a.m. and his bright brown skin withstood the sun, but his voice didn't.
The Reggae Sumfest, Catherine Hall, Montego Bay, venue was alive and kicking last weekend, even with cardboard fireworks, ignited by Baygon, as Summerfest Production staged its 19th annual festival, which was without a doubt far more than the badword cursing and extremely talented Nicki Minaj, who gave lessons to thousands of teens from all across the country.
Sumfest 2011 was about the creativity of the sponsors who were bent on capitalising on every dollar invested.
Red Stripe made sure they were the most sought-after booth, Secrets Resorts the most envied, because of their champagne, caviar and air-conditioning - yes, air-conditioning in the sweltering heat!
Style, beauty and fabulousness were captured by Iberostar, through their decorators, Tai Flora.
Mobile giants Digicel did not disappoint and was one of the hippest attractions on the grounds, wooing socialites of no mean order, while Craven A was the party booth for those 18 and over.
The Wexford had a small gathering of celebrities, while Lee's Full-House Pizza was the midnight train to the stomach and nobody did it better than KFC.
Let's see what Robert Russell and his team have planned for the 20th anniversary during Jamaica's 50th year of Independence in 2012.
