Class Three athlete scorches 400m in 48.54

CALABAR High School's Class Three athlete, Christopher Taylor, was in a mean mood inside the National Stadium, as he sent shock waves through fans with a breathtaking 48.54 seconds win in the 400 metres at yesterday's Corporate Area Development Meet.
Taylor, who actually ran by himself and looks set to break the Champs record (49.17) that was set by Kingston College's Nathaniel Bann, last year. Taylor finished second in that event.
Calabar, which shattered the Class Three 4x100m record at Gibson Relays the previous week, went on to dominate that class' sprinting.
Tyreke Wilson was fastest in the 100m events, stopping the clock at 11.11 seconds, with teammate Dejour Russell finishing second overall in 11.24 seconds. Russell returned later to win the long jump with a leap of 6.28 metres.
It was the same story in the 200m, as both Taylor and Wilson were impressive once again. This time, Wilson led the way, as he scorched the track in 21. 95 seconds to win overall. Taylor was second best after winning his heat in 22.30.
Kingston College's Bann, running in Class Two and Zharnell Hughes, in Class One, also sent out a strong statement in the 200m.
Bann was the quickest in his class after an easy 21.86 seconds.
Hughes, the Carifta and Pan-Am 100m champion, had the fair-sized crowd in a frenzy in his first individual event for his school. Drawn in lane eight, the Anguillan was out of the blocks very fast and although going through the motions in the last 100 metres, was able to record a fantastic 20.80 seconds.
Among the girl's, Carifta 400m Under-17 champion, Tiffany James, led the way. The Papine High student won the Class Two one-lap event in 55.27 seconds, then completed the double with a 24.52-second clocking, the fastest time in the 200 metres.
Her teammate, Candice McLeod, was second overall in 56.97.
Kiara Grant, the Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha) Class Four athlete, continued her impressive form in the 100m as she clocked 11.98 in a negative wind of 1.8m per second to win overall. Her teammate, Kaydi-Ann Wint, topped the Girl's Class One 400m in 59.44.
