Williamsfield leg of highway 2000 project on track
The Government has decided to go ahead with the construction of the Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000.
In September last year, the transport minister Mike Henry said the Government was considering abandoning the project as he pursued efforts to resume the rail service.
But last night the Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced that efforts are now far advanced to secure the money to undertake the Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000.
The Williamsfield leg, or Segment 2A of Highway 2000, will run from Sandy Bay in Clarendon to Williamsfiled in Manchester.
It was originally slated to cost of US$120 million ($8.4 billion).
The project should have started in July, but was delayed for several reasons.
These include the failure of the National Road Operating and Constructing Company (NROCC) to complete the assessment of lands to be acquired to facilitate the highway construction.
Work on the Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000 was later slated to start this month.
It’s not clear whether that timeline or the original project costs are still on schedule.
