The company behind the geothermal operations in Nevis and other islands said its operations is not responsible for the recent earthquakes in the region.

West Indies Power (WIP) has distanced its geothermal initiative from those in Germany and Switzerland, which are reported to have caused seismic activity.

The company said the reservoir system existing on Nevis and the other islands its working on are naturally occurring hydrothermal systems.

It adds that others being pursued in California, Germany and other countries are enhanced geothermal systems attempting to create artificial reservoirs.

WIP said these so-called hot dry rock endeavours are suspected of causing seismic events while naturally occurring hydrothermal systems, have been successfully explored since 1902 without causing earthquakes.
