Job Lane crash carnage could have been worse – bar owner
Had patrons of a Job Lane bar in Spanish Town gathered outside the establishment as was the custom, the carnage from Saturday night’s crash after a bizarre high-speed chase could have been greater.
Shortly after 10 p.m., men travelling in a Toyota Probox motor car raced after another vehicle, believed to be a Nissan AD Wagon, when a barrage of gunshots were heard.
The chase ended when the driver of the Probox lost control, and after multiple flips, slammed into bathroom.
One man was injured in the crash.
The bar operator, who did not want to be named, told The Gleaner that it was the first in her 36 years at the site that she was experiencing anything that calamitous.
“Normally when we lock bar, we always go out (front) to sit down,” she said.
“Down to my fren a say good thing she come for me late ‘cause if she did come earlier, we would go pay the round-robin and come back and sit in front the closed bar … .”
She was still shaken on Sunday but was concerned as well about who would foot the bill for the damage to her business place.
A resident told The Gleaner that before and after the crash, gunshots rang out, forcing everyone nearby to duck for cover.
“Everybody stayed inside because we thought the place was under attack. When the police dem come, we find out it had nothing to do with Job Lane; it just happened here,” the resident said.
Firefighters were called to the scene and assisted in cutting one of the injured occupants of the Probox car from the wreckage, The Gleaner understands.
He remains hospitalised under police guard.
It was reported that the three other occupants managed to free themselves from the vehicle and fled before the police arrived on the scene.
However, the police believe they were picked up at a location by a third vehicle, which was later intercepted by the lawmen.
The police say two others have since been taken into custody.
More than a dozen spent shells believed to have been fired from a high-powered weapon were recovered at the scene.
