Bahamians arrested, undocumented Haitians detained in attempted smuggling operation
NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The authorities in the Bahamas have arrested three Bahamians adults and detained 45 undocumented Haitians as they uncovered a human smuggling attempt at a shipping yard on Bay Street in Nassau.
The operation was conducted late Friday by officers from Operation Ceasefire, acting on intelligence.
In a statement, law enforcement officials said they observed suspicious activity as occupants of a vehicle were seen “transporting individuals to a vessel moored at the shipyard”.
Upon searching a nearby vessel, law enforcement discovered 45 undocumented Haitian nationals on board.
The group consisted of 32 males and 13 females.
This discovery led to the immediate arrest of three Bahamian citizens suspected of orchestrating the smuggling operation: a 48-year-old woman and two men, aged 29 and 50.
The detained immigrants were promptly handed over to officers from the Bahamas Department of Immigration for further processing and investigation.
