Reopen schools after the election
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I commend the prime minister for announcing September 3 as Jamaica’s election day.
However, this date falls just two days after schools reopen on September 1, a period that is crucial for students’ adjustment. The first week of school is not just about lessons it is when guidance counsellors and educators help students settle, feel safe, and receive vital psychosocial support. Political campaigning, preparations for polling, and the use of school buildings as voting stations will inevitably interrupt this process.
Our children deserve an uninterrupted, supportive start to the school year. I urge the Ministry of Education to consider reopening schools on September 8 instead. This simple adjustment would protect the emotional well-being of students while allowing the electoral process to proceed smoothly.
Let us put their stability first and do what is right for our education system.
ROCHINA ANDERSON
Guidance Counsellor
