Falmouth residents question removal of benches from Water Square
Some residents of Falmouth, Trelawny, are questioning the removal of benches from Water Square.
The six benches were placed in the square, in the vicinity of the fountain, after it was pedestrianised, and were widely utilised by persons visiting the area.
However, persons turned up on Tuesday to see the benches gone.
Florence Logan, who operates a business in Water Square, questioned: "Why the sudden removal? The benches served both visitors and locals. They must be returned. Every city in the world has park benches."
Delroy Nettleford, a regular user of the benches, opined that they were removed because homeless persons were using them to sleep on instead of going to the drop-in centre.
Councillor for the Falmouth division, Garth Wilkinson, told The Gleaner, "the municipality had no idea of the planned removal. Mark Hylton of the pier said they were removed for maintenance purposes."
Efforts to reach Hylton, Vice President in charge of Cruise Port Management at The Port Authority of Jamaica, failed.
