When attorney and entrepreneur Brian Forsythe looked at Jamaica's justice system, he saw a gap. For many ordinary citizens, accessing legal help was either too expensive, too complicated, or simply out of reach.
So he set out to change that — not with another law firm, but with an app.
A Lawyer in Your Pocket
Brian is the founder of Pocket Attorney, a groundbreaking mobile application designed to make legal help simple, affordable, and accessible for all Jamaicans.
The app serves as a digital legal companion, giving users access to step-by-step guides, editable legal forms, and connections to real professionals — including attorneys, justices of the peace (JPs), mediators, and bearers — all from their phone.
“It's like having an attorney in your pocket,” Brian said in a recent interview on the Ron Muchette Morning Show on Edge 105 FM. “We wanted to remove the fear and cost barriers so Jamaicans can understand their rights and take action when they need to.”
Solving Everyday Legal Frustrations
In Jamaica, something as simple as finding a JP to witness a document or getting legal advice for a small issue can be time-consuming. Pocket Attorney changes that.
Through the app, users can:
• Expect step-by-step legal procedures (like initiating divorce proceedings, expungement, or parish court matter).
“If you're in St Ann and the attorney willing to help you is in St Catherine, Pocket Attorney bridges that gap instantly,” Brian explained. “You post your request, set your budget, and professionals who are available can respond. You pick who you want to work with.”
A Vision Rooted in Access and Education
Brian's mission goes beyond convenience — it's about empowerment.
With a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Legal Education Certificate (LEC), and Master of Laws (LLM) in Corporate and Commercial Law, Brian understands both the technical and human sides of justice. As a certified mediator, he has seen firsthand how many Jamaicans avoid legal matters simply because they don't know where to start.
“Knowledge of the law shouldn't be reserved for lawyers,” he said. “Everyone deserves to understand their rights and how to act on them.”
That belief inspired the app's tagline: “Be Your Own Attorney.”
Empowering Professionals Too
Pocket Attorney isn't just for citizens — it's also a platform for legal professionals.
Attorneys, JPs, mediators, and bearers can register, verify their credentials, and offer their services directly through the app.
This means professionals gain access to new clients, while users gain access to trusted experts — creating a win-win ecosystem.
Brian emphasised during the Edge 105 interview that the goal is to grow the network of professionals across Jamaica, so more people can receive help faster. “We're inviting attorneys, JPs, and mediators to sign up and be part of this movement,” he said. “The more professionals we have, the more accessible justice becomes.”
Free to Download, Fair to Use
Downloading the Pocket Attorney app is completely free, and most of its basic resources — like videos are open to all users. In an upcoming update set to occur before the end of October users can also expect to see free to view templates and guides available to all users.
Innovation Meets Purpose
Pocket Attorney reflects a growing movement in Jamaica — local innovators using technology to solve distinctly Jamaican problems.
Instead of copying foreign legal tech models, Brian designed a system that fits the realities of a cash-based, community-driven economy, where trust and simplicity matter as much as speed.
As he told Ron Muchette, “It's not about replacing lawyers — it's about making the system work better for everyone.”
