Germaine Mason need not die in vain

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Usain Bolt rides very well and is an athletic superstar. He is a role model.

What we need is for him to lead the Germaine Mason Always Wear a Helmet Campaign.

The fact is, the police have dropped the ball badly on this one. They seek to enforce archaic laws, but the more important enforcement needs are overlooked.

I suggest again the police:

1. Stop all riders driving without helmets.

2. Ticket them immediately and seize their bikes.

3. Bikes should be returned only if the owner/operator pays a fine, presents to the authorities a helmet, and pay the wrecker operator.

4. Adopt zero tolerance.

Why should this be difficult? In fact, it is an elementary series of events that any policeman, at whatever level, should be able to execute.

We cannot have the type of careless situations that impact every part of our society and which creates havoc at the primary and secondary health-care levels. The press can bring the necessary pressure to change the present situation.
