Backing OCG probe of Chinese land giveaway

Published:Saturday | May 6, 2017 | 5:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I write in support of Contractor General Dirk Harrison's probe into the Government's giving away of 1,200 acres of land belonging to the people of Jamaica to investors who build highways here.

Companies that build highways know that it takes many years for them to regain their capital and profit, but it seems to me that the organisation building our highway in Jamaica wants to get back capital and profit in a hurry.

I do not know what China Harbour was told by our Government at the time of the deal, but the fact is, this is a poor country saddled with debts that we are struggling to pay, so companies that come to build highways must not expect to get back their money in a hurry.

The Jamaican people must be given no argument that the deal was done by the People's National Party. The Jamaica Labour Party is now in power, and this Government must not allow the people's land being given away carelessly, while some of the poor live on the streets.
