Tribute to Prof Fred Hickling

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Words cannot describe my feeling of loss on hearing that prominent psychiatrist Professor Fred Hickling has died. Professor Hickling was one of Jamaica’s treasures through his work in the field of community mental health. His work and advocacy on behalf of the community of the mentally ill were rare, refreshing, and inspiring.

Professor Hickling was an authority figure on mental illness. His many articles, reports, and presentations on mental health will continue to benefit generations to come.

My condolences to his immediate family and The University of the West Indies, where he served for many years. Rest in peace, Professor Hickling.
