CARICOM is broken

THE EDITOR, Madam:

CARICOM is broken. The recent glaring foreign policy and philosophical differences on Cuba, vocally expressed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Guyana’s Prime Minster Dr Irfaan Ali, is another weak historical post.Persad-Bissessar also broke with her CARICOM colleagues on the issue of the bombing of the alleged Venezuelan drug boats.

Additionally, CARICOM is still not on one accord on the matter of the Caribbean Court of Justice as an alternative to the UK Privy Council, and on the free movement of Caribbean citizens within the region.

Unless CARICOM speaks with one voice and adopts a majority-rule policy approach on critical regional and international issues, it will not be taken seriously, and will continue to be perceived by some as irrelevant, a glorified talk shop, and disunited.
