Delano Seiveright has confirmed that the Pear Tree Primary School will be closed.

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Caretaker for Eastern St Thomas, Delano Seiveright says there are fears that several primary schools in the parish could be forced to close due to low school populations.

The government has been on a drive to merge schools with small populations for efficiency and save costs.

According to the Caretaker, he has confirmed that the Pear Tree Primary School will be closed.

Seiveright says the Winchester and Amity Hall Primary schools could also be closed down.

He's calling on the Education Ministry to intervene.

The Eastern St Thomas Caretaker says the ministry must send a high level team to carry out comprehensive consultations with parents, guardians and community leaders on the matter.

Seiveright says parents and residents have been complaining about the possible closures.

He says they are worried about the possibility of increased costs and sudden dislocation.
