San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan arrives near the site of a mass shooting on Wednesday in San Bernardino, California.

The police say two suspects linked to a mass shooting at a southern California social services centre have been killed.

The suspects — a male and a female — are believed to be behind the Inland Regional Center shooting in San Bernardino that left 14 people dead and 17 others injured.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said at a news conference Wednesday evening that authorities found what they believe is an explosive device at the Inland Regional Center and the Bomb squads were working on it.

According to the FBI, it's a possibility that the shooting is "terrorism".

Burguan also says the suspects were wearing "assault-style clothing" and were both armed with assault rifles and handguns.

The police say another person was detained after he was seen running near a gun battle between officers and the two suspects.

Burguan said it was not clear if that person is connected to the shooting that killed at least 14 people at the Inland Regional Center.
