Prisoners hack WiFi, government boosting security

National Security Minister Robert Montague says the ministry is moving to increase security at the island’s correctional facilities after prisoners at a penal institution hacked a WiFi connection and accessed the Internet.

Montague did not identify the prison.

However, he says the ministry is concerned about the development which poses serious a security breach.

According to Montague, earlier this year, the ministry restored technology to block cell phone signals in prisons.

Meanwhile, the national security minister has charged the Police Commissioner and Police Service Commission to promote more members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Montague is concerned that there have not been many promotions in the JCF in two years.

He lamented that this is unfair and demoralising to good, hard working cops.

On taking office last year, Montague asked then police commissioner, Dr Carl Williams, to introduce a transparent, merit-based promotion policy.

He said lower ranked cops have complained that the promotion process is fraught with cronyism.
