The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it will this week provide a comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding the arrest and murder charge laid against former policeman Odain Williams, who was removed from a departing flight last week. The Gleaner understands that Williams was detained after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ruled that he should be charged with murder in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred while he was a serving member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Jamaica opens with double gold - Beckford lands long jump title, Prince hurdles to first global medal

Jamaica picked up its first medals on day one of athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games as Romaine Beckford and Demario Prince mined gold in the men’s high jump and 110m hurdles final, respectively, at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland. Beckford reigned supreme in the men’s high jump, clearing a height of 2.25 metres to finish atop the podium. India’s Sarvesh Kushare claimed the silver medal with 2.25, while Kimani Jack of England was third with 2.20. Jamaica’s Raymond Richards finished fourth, also clearing a height of 2.20.

The patriotic tune took the coveted title at the grand finale of the Jamaica Festival Song Competition held on Saturday at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew. It will anchor celebrations for the country’s 64th anniversary of Independence this year. Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, presented the artiste with the grand prize of $3 million along with the winning trophy.

Stocks are drifting on Wall Street and crude oil prices drop 6%

Stocks are drifting on Wall Street Monday and oil prices fell after the US and Iran paused their attacks while work resumed on restarting negotiations to end the war. The S&P 500 fell 0.2 per cent. The index is coming off two weekly losses in a row. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 123 points, or 0.2 per cent, as of midday. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.5 per cent.
