The St Catherine Municipal Corporation has passed a resolution calling for a special monthly allowance for parents of autistic children.

The resolution was passed at the corporation's monthly meeting on Thursday.

Councillor Roogae Kirlew, of the Mount Industry division, tabled the resolution urging the Government to establish a special fund from which parents with autistic children can be given a grant of at least $30,000 monthly.

Kirlew, who is also the principal  of the Spanish Town Primary School, said the need is urgent.

"I think  that the Government of Jamaica should establish a grant to assist the parents with autistic children, there should be greater access to special education programmes for autistic children," Kirlew said.
