A New Era: ADA Jamaica Embraces Diversity and Forward Momentum
In a significant evolution for the Jamaican automotive industry, the Automobile Dealers Association (ADA) Jamaica, a cornerstone of the sector since its inception in 1955, has ushered in a new chapter with the appointment of Jacqueline Stewart Lechler as its chairperson. This milestone is further underscored by the historic presence of three female directors on the seven-member board, marking a pivotal shift towards inclusivity and diverse leadership.
Founded by eight pioneering franchised new car auto dealers, the ADA was formally incorporated as a limited liability company in 1966. Its enduring mission has remained steadfast: to promote, support, and protect the character, status, welfare, and interests of the motor trade, specifically representing automobile manufacturers in Jamaica. Over decades, the ADA has solidified its position as a vital force, contributing to the industry’s growth through initiatives like providing equipment, training, and scholarships for local mechanics via the Jamaica German Automotive School and implementing projects that keep Jamaicans informed about modern transportation advancements.
The recent board restructuring sees Mrs Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Stewart Lechler taking the helm, succeeding Kent La Croix, who served with distinction for over two decades. Joining her are returning directors Mr Duncan Stewart (managing director, Stewart’s Automotive Group Ltd), Mr Tom Connor (nanaging director, Toyota Jamaica Ltd), Mm Daniel De La Barrera (Managing director, Changan Auto), and Mr Andrew Jackson (managing director, Jetcon Corporation Ltd). Notably, the board welcomes Mrs Luz Tejada (CEO, Magna Motors Dealership Ltd) and Mrs Deborah Stewart (CEO, Fidelity Motors Ltd), adding crucial perspectives and expertise.
Lechler has been instrumental in steering her family-owned company, Stewart’s Automotive Group Ltd, to a position of leadership within the Jamaican automotive landscape. Her strategic vision and unwavering commitment to excellence have solidified the company’s reputation and driven its sustained success.
“The board is excited to continue its collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, the Island Traffic Authority, the Trade board and other stakeholders to ensure that Jamaicans enjoy a satisfactory motoring experience with safety at the core,” revealed Lechler.
The presence of three accomplished female leaders on the board signifies a significant stride towards greater diversity and representation.
Mrs Deborah Stewart, general manager of Fidelity Motors Limited, the authorized Nissan dealership in Jamaica, is a distinguished figure with over two decades of experience. Her career began with Audi in the early 2000s, where she quickly excelled in marketing and sales. Her expertise has since shaped the presence of Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche in the Jamaican market. In 2023, she played a pivotal role in Fidelity Motors’ commitment to innovation by introducing the all-electric Nissan X-Trail e-POWER, demonstrating a dedication to sustainable transportation solutions.
Mrs Luz Tejada, managing director of Magna Motors Dealership Limited, the exclusive distributor of Hyundai vehicles in Jamaica, is an accomplished business leader with extensive experience in the manufacturing and commercial sectors. Since assuming her role in 2024, she has strategically expanded the company, most notably with the opening of a new location in Montego Bay. An economist with an Executive MBA from Florida International University, Mrs Tejada brings a global perspective and analytical prowess, fostering strong relationships and driving Hyundai’s brand presence.
“The Automotive Industry has been predominantly male led, and for many years, with my mother, Diana Stewart, and I being the only female leadership in the industry. Our board composition speaks to the diversity of thinking and leadership in the new vehicle industry, and we look forward to what we can achieve,” said Lechler.
The appointment of Lechler as chairperson marks a significant milestone, solidifying her leadership within the ADA.
“I am honoured to be tasked to serve the automobile industry alongside my brother Duncan and following in the footsteps of my grandfather and father, Lionel Stewart and Richard Stewart,” Lechler declared.
This new composition of the ADA board, under the leadership of Mrs Jacqueline Stewart Lechler, signals a promising future for the automotive industry in Jamaica, one that embraces diversity, innovation, and continued growth.
