For more than three decades Leon ‘Lemon’ Parkins has entertained , both as an actor in local roots plays, and as a stand-up comedian.
It comes as no surprise therefore, where his natural progression has now taken him.
Parkins, working with fellow actor, Samuel Turner, popularly known as Sammy Question, will present his début dramatic production, Good Girl Gone Bad, during the third weekend of November in Florida, with Jacksonville, Palm Bay and Fort Lauderdale being the targeted cities.
Good Girl Gone Bad is written by Parkins and Turner. Parkins is the director and Turner the producer, through his Fun and Laughter Production brand. The cast includes Parkins, Alwayne Allen, Monique Barrett-Foster, and sisters, Shanette and Latoya Nicholson.
The play surrounds a dedicated woman who eventually gets fed up of her spouse’s disrespectful and ludicrous behaviour and decides to make changes to her life.
“The cast is really a young and talented group and the international experience is new for them but we’re a solid team and we’re going to build something that will last for many years,” Parkins said.
He promised that audiences at the three locations where the show will be staged can expect an evening of total fun and laughter and expressed confidence that the new venture will yield extreme success.
His new focus is similar to that of other Jamaican theatre stalwarts who have made the transition from acting to writing and directing.
“Others have gone this route, branching off to do their own shows, so now it’s my time to take up my own. Mi deh pon a legendary status right now, while maintaining a stand-up comedy career at the same time,” Parkins said.
Parkins, a product of St Mary, made his name starring in several hit Jamaican roots plays including More Passa Passa, Bad Mind, Man Fi Get Bun, The Watchman, Crazy Landlord, among others.
He has also steadily built up a huge following as a stand-up comedian over the years, with his “stammer man” routine always a hit with audiences.
