Lord Hailes arrives in Jamaica for multipurpose trip

The Governor General of the West Indies, Lord Hailes and his wife arrived in Jamaica for a three-week visit. While they will tend to official business, the couple will also use some of the trip for rest and relaxation.

Semi-official visit

GOVERNOR GENERAL, WIFE COME

THEIR EXCELLENCIES the Governor General of the West Indies, Lord Hailes arrived in Jamaica yesterday morning on their second visit since Lord Hailes assumed the Governor Generalship of the Federation in January.

They were met and welcomed to the island by the Governor of Jamaica, Sir Kenneth Blackburne, and Lady Blackburne and by the Chief Minister the Hon. Norman Manley, Q.C., and the Mayor of the Corporate Area, Councillor Iris King.

Their Excellencies’ visit was a semi-official one and will last three weeks during which they will relax mainly in the hills of St Andrew, spend some time on the north coast, and visit other parts of the island and institutions.

Principal official functions in connection with the visit will be a dinner party at King’s House on Saturday, lunch with the Jamaica Regiment on Monday next week and a small cocktail party at King’s House on Friday, August 27, at which the Governor General and Lady Hailes will be hosts.

Went on board

Lord and Lady Hailes arrived in the Camilo which docked at no. 2 Pier around 8. Just before 9 the Governor General’s Aide-de-Camp Captain Neville Ernandez, who preceded him to Jamaica, and his additional A.D.C. in Jamaica, Major F. K. N. Mascoll of the Jamaica Regiment, went on board. They were followed soon after by the Governor and Lady Blackburne, who were attended by Major Sandys Sherwood, A.D.C. to the Governor.

Promptly at 9, the Governor General led the party down the gangway. Presented to them on the pier were the acting Commissioner of Police, Mr. L. P. R. Browning, Lieutenant-Colonel B. L. Gunnell of Caribbean Area Command Headquarters (representing the Area Commander) Councillor Iris King the Mayor of Kingston and the Chief Minister.

The Mayor presented Lady Hailes with a basket of orchids on behalf of the City and its citizens, the orchids having come from the gardens of the Acting Custos of St Andrew, the Hon. G.C. Gunter.

After a short conversation, the Governor-General and Lady Hailes entered a car that took them straight to “Craigton”, the Irish Town residence of the Hon. R. L. M. Kirkwood and Mrs Kirkwood, where they will spend the first part of their stay.

Their Excellencies will receive a courtesy call from the Governor, and Lady Blackburn at “Craigton”, at 12.00 noon, today.

Sir Kenneth and Lady Blackburne have been invited to lunch with the Governor-General and Lady Hailes.

At 4:15 p.m. their Excellencies will have tea with the Hon. C. M. Pringle, Custos of St Mary and Mrs Pringle at Hardware Cap.
