Cypriot envoy presents Credentials

The first High Commissioner of Cyprus to Jamaica, Mr Andreas Jacovides, presented his credentials to the Governor-General, Sir Clifford Campbell, at King’s House, yesterday morning.

He later presented a copy of his letter of credence to the Prime Minister, the Hon. Michael Manley, at Jamaica House.

At King’s House, Mr Jacovides expressed on behalf of his President, Archbishop Makarios III, “feelings of sincere friendship and deep esteem” towards the Government and people of Jamaica.

The history and traditions of his country and Jamaica were different and the islands geographically distant from each other, he said, but they had many similarities. Both had recently emerged into independence and were of approximately the same size and of similar natural beauty.

The two countries also faced similar problems and “both you and ourselves are dedicated to democracy and peace and to the bringing about of the economic and social progress of all our citizens in conditions of equality of opportunity”, the new High Commissioner said.

Principles

He added: “Internationally, we have in common our wholehearted dedication to the principles embodied in the Charter of the United Nations. Both in this world organiastion and in the Non-Aligned. Movement, as well as within the Commonwealth, your stand and ours, are dictated by unswerving attachment to these principles, and we have frequently had occasion to act together for the achievement of our common goals.

“It is my sincerely held hope and conviction that as we have worked closely together in international forums in the past, we shall likewise cooperate fruitfully in our bilateral relations in the future.”

He pledged his best endeavours in fostering the closest possible ties of friendship and cooperation between Jamaica and Cyprus for the mutual advantage of both peoples.

Sir Clifford expressed pleasure on receiving this first envoy from Cyprus to Jamaica and wished for him a successful and enjoyable tour of duty here

He told Mr Jocovides that the differences he mentioned would “not deter us from working towards a common goal for the betterment of mankind”.

Through their common membership in the forums mentioned, Sir Clifford was sure that improvement in social and economic conditions could be achieved. He was equally sure, he said, that the friendly cooperation that existed between Cyprus and Jamaica in those forums constituted “a very sound basis on which to pursue our  relations”

Accompanying Mr Jocovides to King’s House and Jamaica House were Mr Louis Boothe, Chief of Protocol; Miss Parthe Edwards, Protocol Officer; and the Governor-General’s ADC, Lt Peter Playfair-Scott.
