Brazilian coach here to prepare soccer team

Gleaner Sports Reporter

JORGE PENNA, Brazilian soccer coach who will prepare the Jamaica team for the Carib Games, arrived on the island yesterday afternoon from Rio de Janeiro.

He will remain until August and will be in charge of football in the Games.

About the training programme he will introduce here Penna said: “I will obey four rules. First, discipline, for without that, teamwork cannott be obtained. Secondly, simplicity, which is the principal characteristic of good football. Thirdly, modern methods of physical training will end in the players acquiring perfect familiarity with the technique and the ability to use it to its fullest; and fourth, tactics.”

Penna said that he would lay emphasis on the 4-2-4 tactics used by rural Brazilian teams but added that “all-tactics are useful when executed correctly.”

He will spend the first two weeks watching the club teams in action and getting to know the players. Then he will be given thirty to forty players to start working with and from whom the eventual team for the Games will be selected.

Penna is confident that under his coaching, Jamaica will do well.

He will receive a special bonus if the Jamaica team wins the title and a smaller sum if they reach the semi-finals only.

He was met at the airport by Herbert MacDonald, Managing Director of National Sports Ltd.; Winston Meeks, president of the JFA; and other leading football personalities.
