Tachyon is 'horse of the year'

The native-bred four-year-old colt Tachyon, owned by Peter DuQuesnay and trained by Arthur Sharpe, was unanimously voted ‘Horse of the Year’ for 1973 when the Selection Committee met at their annual meeting held at Courtleigh Manor Hotel yesterday afternoon.

Runner-up for the title was Tachyon’s stable champion Jackson, also owned by DuQuesnay, while the 1972 Derby winner Balladier defeated Eight Thirty for the second runner-up spot.

Tachyon, a handsome bay colt, is by the outstanding sire ZALEUCUS out of ALL THE WAY, a native-bred mare by GREEK SYMPHONY, an English-bred horse imported to this country by Maurice Heron, father of trainer Mortie Heron. After only one outing as a two-year-old in late ’72, in which he made no showing, he went from strength to strength the following year, showing tremendous versatility. By the end of the season, his victories included the top handicap race for three-year-olds, the Governor’s Cup, and the richest and most popular handicap race, the coveted Gold Cup.

The Trend Award for the jockey with the ‘best conduct on and off the track’ went to champion jockey George HoSang for the third successive year. “The Most Improved Jockey,” for which the David Lyons Cup is donated, was won by Donavan Lindo, while K. Brown was voted 'The Most Promising Apprentice'.
