University of Technology closer to institutional accreditation

Professor Stephen Vasciannie, president of the University of Technology (UTech), is upbeat about the push for institutional accreditation from the University Council of Jamaica.
"The university is seeking institutional accreditation. We expect to hear from the accreditors over the next few months. This will have a significant impact on your lives here, as if all goes well you'll be in an institution that is institutionally accredited. Apart from that, many of our programmes are already accredited," Professor Vasciannie told the gathering at UTech's Annual Induction Ceremony for new students at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium last week.
Institutional accreditation is granted to a university once it has demonstrated academic and administrative efficiency, complemented by a rigid internal quality assurance framework.
The University of the West Indies is the only institution with institutional accreditation, which was secured in 2012.
Professor Vasciannie pointed out that there is renewed focus on upgrading UTech's infrastructure. He outlined that there are new computer labs, enhanced science labs and lecture theatres, along with steadier WiFi access on all campuses.
The university has also answered calls for improved student service delivery.
He explained, "Improvements include extensions to opening hours of the library, including Sundays. You can get a transcript within three days down from 14 days. The ID cards you get at the start of this year will go with you to the end of the programme. If you're doing a four-year programme it will last for four years."
The president urged students to represent the UTech well and to be guided by a sense of purpose.
He charged, "Treat others with care, respect, and decency. Don't be afraid to speak truth to power. There are times when it's hard to find power, but whenever you find power, don't be afraid to speak truth to power."
