Letter of the Day | A trinity of wickedness
THE EDITOR, Sir:
The nation is being murdered from all angles! Just as we are lifting the lid off the state of emergency (SOE) and crime is breathing a sigh of relief, to come back bigger and better, we are once again on the celebrated list of corrupt countries.
Congrats Jamaica! Well done! And I know with this stellar performance, dem tink seh wi done, wi jus a come. For if the binitarianism of crime and corruption ain’t enough, then a trinity of wickedness is upon us with abortionists in the mix.
THE FATHER OF ALL EVIL
Corruption is killing us. The love of money, which is the father and driving force to corruption, sees even the little man on the street using his head to get around others to swindle, scam or extort. But if the head of the stream is corrupt, what says the lower end, when leaders, found corrupt, either remain further entrenched in politics as if rewarded for a good deed, or are shifted to another ministry to gain greater experience.
This moral path has landed us 44 out of a hundred, where, according to Transparency International and its 2018 Corruption Perception’s Index, 0 is corruption at its best, and 100 is heavenly clean. We all know 44 out of a 100 will take us nowhere in life, or could it take us somewhere with crime?
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Anyone who has not heard of our past crime rate is living in the past. Owing, arguably, to the SOE, crime, which took a 21 per cent vacation in 2018, is fully rested and revitalized, eyeing a promotion upon his full resumption of work. It baffles us all, for with so many churches per square mile, and one of the highest religious densities in the world, our nation has tended in the past towards an all-time low in an abyss of murderers.
As with the love of money or the so-called father of corruption, we seem to have to live with crime, this son of a…for want of a better word…gun! And the frightening thing is, we don’t seem to mind this one-eyed God. O Father!
THE SPIRIT OF KILLING
The recent call to legalise abortion tends towards creating a powerful triumvirate that is symptomatic of the spirit of killing that lies in us. Why must it be made legal when abortions are still taking place and no one is being prosecuted under the current status quo?
While women have a right to do what they want to do with their own bodies and while corruption and crime seem clear cut and a no no, there is an overall spirit of moral degeneracy that makes corruption, crime and now abortion, cater-cousins.
Let us be careful of this direction in which we are moving as a nation. In the spirit of the Golden rule, I shudder to think, if my mother, under the pressure of my father, 25 years her senior, had, 42 years ago, taken this decision to abort me.
Corruption and crime, now abortion, Editor, all I can say, what a nation wid dem ya BREED a murderation!
