Artificial Intelligence, the new buzz word

Published:Monday | May 6, 2019 | 12:26 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It was Professor Howard Gardener who coined the phrase Multiple Intelligences (MI), due to the fact that there were some loopholes in the Intelligent Quotient (IQ) philosophy/theory.A person with a high IQ meant that the person was bright on the premise that he/she has a wide knowledge of a multiplicity of subject areas. Then came Dr. Gardener with his theory in 1983 of MI, which dismisses that IQ theory by placing intelligence of people in categories. In that, a person who is good at music was intelligent, yes, but he doesn’t necessarily have to know sports, languages or mathematics.

The MI philosophy has actually disproved the IQ theory and improved on the intelligence theory. The 21st century saw the proliferation and emergence of the MI theory worldwide. MI was the new norm as far as human learning theories was concerned. The charlatan/wiseacre theory is now dead; we now are fully aware that nobody has comprehensive command of knowledge in many areas at once. The IQ theory proved to be limited in many aspects.

Development of robotically manned gadgets

To counter the attacks of cyberbullying and other cybercrimes, man has extended the development of robotically manned gadgets. So this is how the artificial intelligence (AI) was conceived. Most people are calling for cybersecurity and the calls are getting louder and louder.

Now people are turning to the belief that youngsters and adults can benefit from this new buzz in learning, wherein machines are being used facilitate learning, for a much more positive and modern outcome. We welcome the dynamics in this new innovation, which will create a much more suitable environment, to command the attention of our most inquisitive and impressionable minds.

AI shall be the new gateway for learning, in the coming decades of this century. People will have to get used to the type of technology being used and develop the expertise to be up-to-date with the current trends.

Communicating by AI is here to stay and we will have to recognize that, and be in tune with these developments to foster upward growth within our society.
