Put an end to crime and violence

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Is enough being done to curtail crime and violence in our country? Should innocent lives be put at risk because of the immorality of mankind? The persistent increase of violence in Jamaica is quite alarming, which is a cause for concern to the citizens.

Statistics show that the crime rate has increased drastically over the years involving reprisal killings, sexual assault, and other criminal acts. What I find very alarming is that most of these criminal activities are reportedly being carried out by teenagers.

Criminal behaviours are a result of some overarching factors such as adverse childhood experiences, negative social environments, substance abuse and social and economic factors, which include lack of education, unemployment, and the inability to meet demands.

How can a man look at a child or an elderly person and want to take their life? Is this not a level of inhumanity that has taken over society? People nowadays do not want to resolve their issues or disputes maturely, instead they resort to violence. This is not a solution in resolving any issue, it only makes matters worse with adverse consequences.

A more drastic approach needs to be taken in order to reduce crime and violence. There should be more effort in providing more job opportunities and educational access for the upward mobility and growth of the society. Law enforcers should be more prompt in carrying out their duties by encouraging people to cooperate with them and not break the law.

As citizens, we should be empowered to speak out against criminality, be more responsible for our actions, and encourage our youths on how to deal with situations without resorting to violence.
