Getting hurt by price increases of essential items

Published:Saturday | March 20, 2021 | 12:14 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Does the government of Jamaica really care about us? At the rate at which the prices of goods have increased, I think not. We can only bear so much, especially as a developing country. We have been in a pandemic for over a year now, and the prices of goods have been increasing. The people of Jamaica most definitely cannot afford another increase.

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica has reported a 10.8 per cent reduction in employment as of last year July. They even mentioned that “the decline in employment has been largely attributed to COVID-19”.

Not many years ago little money could feed an entirely family. Now that is highly impossible, we can barely afford to make it out of the supermarket with a bag full of goods. Most of us fear going to the supermarket. We are already in a crisis, and the constantly-rising prices of essential goods is hurting us more. We can bear so much, and no more. Can the Government do something urgently about it?
