Partner with entities to train auto mechanics

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to the business article, ‘Calls for overhaul to motor repairs in Jamaica,’ published in The Gleaner on May 25.

A comprehensive review of auto repairs and also partnership is a welcome step. This entails training and educating, certification and hiring, but not displacing auto repairs technicians.

Shortage of auto repairs technicians is not unique to Jamaica. There is a significant shortage of auto repairs technicians in the United States, and it is a growing problem.

The industry is facing a shortage of qualified technicians due to insufficient training programmes, and increasing demand for repairs.

To address, the auto industry needs is to focus on attracting and retaining more technicians by improving pay, offering more training opportunities, and addressing their negative perceptions of the profession.

Any partnership out of China is welcome, and similar partnership with entities like Jamaica German Automotive School, in 1995, JAGAS, HEART/NSTA Trust should be explored.

Our auto technicians need all the ongoing training they can get to keep abreast with the high tech auto industry.
