Robust Opposition is critical for democracy

THE EDITOR, Madam:

A report in The Gleaner of June 17 quoted Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness as saying, “We nuh really need an Opposition because our supporters are our staunchest constructive critics.” In effect, was this a suggestion for a one-party State?

A robust Opposition is not a luxury but a necessity for a thriving democracy. It ensures that the government remains accountable, inclusive, and aligned with the needs of the people. As John F Kennedy said, “Without debate, without criticism, no administration and no country can succeed and no republic can survive.”

Democracy thrives on the principle of accountability, with the ruling party being consistently monitored for its policies and action through meaningful debates, deliberations and scrutiny within and outside Parliament. A robust Opposition acts as a check against the misuse of power, protecting the interests of the public, and ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered in policy making. This ensures transparency and prevents potential abuse of power. In effect, it serves as the conscience of governance. The Opposition also serves as a potential future government, offering voters a choice beyond the current administration. The absence of an Opposition creates a void that has leaves critical issues unaddressed and the democratic process weakened.
