Letter of the Day | Working together will achieve success in education

THE EDITOR, Madam:

As educators, our role goes beyond just teaching; we are also mentors and guides for our students. It’s important for us to act professionally and to fulfil this responsibility for the betterment of our society.

Some experienced teachers seem to believe that real progress can only happen when they are in charge or within their own established groups. New and innovative ideas from younger or less experienced professionals are often ignored or criticised without any helpful feedback. Ironically, these same ideas are later accepted when introduced by others, sometimes without even questioning their origin.

This ‘gatekeeper mentality’ holds back the teaching profession and prevents necessary growth and change. This mindset can be found at all levels, including in colleges and universities, where some individuals feel the need to undermine their peers, thinking that opportunities are limited and that they have to protect their position.

To make improvements in education, we need to understand that integrity is not just a concept; it’s something we must actively demonstrate. Building a strong character and truly practising integrity is key. We should prioritise working together and supporting each other, rather than criticising others’ ideas. By collaborating, we can enhance our profession and create an environment where every student has the chance to reach their potential.

Educators should be mentors and guides, sharing knowledge and experiences with one another. We shouldn’t feel threatened by ideas that come from outside our contributions. Our focus needs to be on including everyone, rather than excluding those we view as different. The road to success in education lies in teamwork, with everyone striving for excellence while holding each other accountable.
