Body-cams need to be implemented

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to the article, ‘Fatal Cherry Tree Lane shooting regrettable, constabulary force supports body cameras – JCF’, published in The Gleaner on September 25.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) should be commended for expressing regret at the fatal Cherry Free Lane shooting, and supports body cameras. In addition, to take action about the facts of what took place “are to be conclusively determined by an independent investigation”.

However, it is regrettable that Jahmar Farquharson, 22, was killed inside his home in Cherry Tree Lane on September 15 after a police team went there to execute a search warrant, according to authorities. In addition, according to news reports, INDECOM said the deceased was reportedly not named on the warrant.

Both US and UK governments are heavily involved in police cameras use during raids (planned police operations) and property searches primarily revolve around setting national policies, establishing legal guidelines, and providing funding.

However, the specific regulations are often managed at the local law enforcement level, creating variation in implementation.

Thus, it is time for the Government of Jamaica, and the Opposition to take action.
