THE EDITOR, Madam:

Jamaica stands at a critical stage in its national development where deliberate and sustained effort to strengthen the values and attitudes that shape everyday behaviour should be mooted. Emphasis should be placed on developing the human and social capital that ultimately determines the success of any nation.

For this reason, Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness should give serious consideration to implementing a National Values and Attitudes Campaign.

Lasting progress requires a national culture that encourages positive behaviour and a shared commitment to the common good. A comprehensive National Values and Attitudes Campaign could help foster such a culture by promoting principles that unite. These principles should include integrity, respect, tolerance, accountability, patriotism, kindness, volunteerism, and a strong work ethic. The campaign should seek not only to inform but also to inspire and motivate behavioural change through practical activities and community engagement.

Importantly, this initiative should be established as a long-term national project with clearly defined goals, measurable targets, and regular evaluation. All citizens should be involved in delivering consistent messages and reinforcing positive behaviours. Public education campaigns, leadership programmes, mentorship initiatives, community workshops, media partnerships, and recognition awards for exemplary citizenship could form part of a coordinated strategy.

Adequate and sustained funding would be essential. Too often, worthwhile programmes fail because they lack the resources needed to achieve meaningful and lasting impact. Investment should support research, programme implementation, training, monitoring, evaluation, and public engagement activities. Special attention should be given to young people, who represent the future leadership and workforce of the country.

A National Values and Attitudes Campaign would complement existing efforts to improve public safety, educational achievement, economic productivity, and social cohesion. It would encourage people to recognise that nation-building is not solely the responsibility of government but a shared duty of all citizens. Jamaica's long-term success will depend not only on physical development but also on the character, conduct, and values of its people. A serious commitment to strengthening these foundations would be one of the most important investments for the future.
