THE EDITOR, Madam:

October has returned, bringing observances such as Heritage Week and National Heroes Day. As usual, discussions will focus on Louise Bennett-Coverley, OM, and Robert Nesta Marley, OM. It is hoped these conversations remain free of partisan politics.

There is no question that the stature of both figures has grown over time, reflecting their immense contributions to Jamaican culture at home and abroad. Their enduring influence raises the issue of whether further national recognition is warranted. The Order of National Hero is Jamaica’s highest distinction, but this prompts an important debate: should the honour remain reserved for those linked to the struggle for political independence, or should exceptional contributions in culture and other fields also be regarded as central to nation-building?

As Jamaica approaches 65 years of independence and 50 years since the last National Hero inductions, the Government should consider establishing a committee of representatives from the parliamentary Opposition, the Church, academia, and civil society to review the matter.
