Jamaica-born designer Edvin Thompson of Theophilio won the Council of Fashion Designers of America's (CFDA) American Emerging Designer of the Year Award, at the Pool + the Grill, inside the Seagram Building on Park Avenue in Manhattan, last night.

Surrounded by some of the biggest names in fashion, including Vogue's Anna Wintour, while donning a red ensemble, the elated Thompson accepted his award and greeted guests exclaiming, "This is heavy!"

In a recent interview with The Gleaner, Thompson, who is also a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner, was thrilled to be nominated for the Emerging Designer Award.

Thompson's Brooklyn-based label, Theophilio, is a tribute to his Jamaican heritage and experiences since moving to America. The Theophilio brand ethos embodies community, inclusivity, and diversity. "It represents all of us, really looking good while we face our trials and triumphs," said Thompson.

Thompson launched Theophilio in 2016 and most recently dropped his Spring/Summer 2022 collection, dubbed 'Air Jamaica', to rave reviews. This year, Thompson also attended his first Met Gala, invited by Lewis Hamilton, and dressed track star Sha'Carri Richardson and model Alton Mason.

The CFDA Awards was hosted by actress Emily Blunt of The Devil Wears Prada fame. Other notable winners of the night's CFDA Awards were American Womenswear Designer of the Year, Christopher John Rogers for Christopher John Rogers; American Accessories Designer of the Year, Telfar Clemens for Telfar; and International Women's Designer of the Year, Demna Gvasalia for Balenciaga. Other winners included International Men's Designer of the Year, which went to Grace Wales Bonner for Wales Bonner. While the Fashion Icon nod went to actress and fashionista Zendaya.
